LEGO 4729 Dumbledore’s Office

This 2002 set is the only LEGO Dumbledore’s Office made individually. While we do have a version of it in the Hogwarts Castle set, this one is the only with just the office.

Originally, this set brings three minifigures, all of which in the old, yellow-faced design. It focuses on Harry’s visit to the Chamber of Secrets, and has several interesting items as well as the infamous spiral staircase.

LEGO Dumbledore’s Office is a three-story building. Two of these may close up or open up for play. The lowest level is the spiral staircase, which leads to the office itself on the middle floor. The topmost floor has a gear mechanism that spins a transparent purple printed piece.

This set has lots of play functions, which are great for entertainment. While it’s part of the Chamber of Secrets subtheme (much like the LEGO Hogwarts Castle), it’s generic and full enough to play many scenarios. All it takes is imagination!

The LEGO 4729 set comes with Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and Minerva McGonagall. This was the first set to feature Minerva, and the only one until the LEGO Hogwarts Castle set.

LEGO Dumbledore’s Office Review

This is possibly one of the best sets in the whole Harry Potter theme. While later sets have more pieces and more detailed appearance (in accordance with LEGO’s evolution), this one is still very interesting.

For one, it’s remarkably large. The build is quite big and grandiose on its own. The folding wings giving an interesting detail to the whole structure. They appear on the bottom and second floors and close in.

While the second floor doesn’t close entirely, the first one does. The outside of the first floor comes with a dragon’s head and wings as well as a scorpion “key” that, when fitted under the dragon’s head, locks the walls closed. This makes for a neat, put-together look.

The spiral staircase can move with a touch, and fold in and out as you wish. There are also shelves on its left side and a safe on the right side. The shelves hold spells and a letter, as well as a golden key.

Up the stairs we have Dumbledore’s office itself. This one doesn’t follow the appearance of either books or movies, but keeps the spirit. There is his desk, a swiveling armchair, and a potion shelf on the back. It also comes with a transparent potion bottle. On the desk we find a black hat, presumably the Sorting Hat. Unfortunately this set does not come with any portraits, nor Fawkes.

The potions shelf is actually a moving wall, which when turned reveals a golden key. There is stained glass on this wall as well, made of transparent bricks. The bottom floor also includes a moving wall which works as a secret passage. It’s closed with a transparent purple piece, a quite unusual one at that. The desk also has a secret compartment.

Minifigures

As mentioned above, this set has three minifigures. One of them is Professor McGonagall, which back then was exclusive to this set. Today she’s still a rare minifigure, set only in the Hogwarts Castle set (which also includes a smaller version of Dumbledore’s office). She comes all in green and with a witch’s hat, as well as no hairpiece.

LEGO Dumbledore’s Office wouldn’t be complete without Albus Dumbledore himself, this version in his purple robes and with grey hair and beard. Harry appears as well, yellow-faced and with a cape. The cape has stars printed inside. Because this set is quite old, the minifigures appeal more to the book characters than the film characters, with their more modern uniforms and clothes.

Conclusion

This relatively old set has withstood the test of time. While it’s not as refined as newer sets and models, it looks impressive, sizeable, and offers just enough playability to keep younger Potterheads and their parents entertained for a good time. The pieces are also quite unique and interesting for those who like making their own creations. LEGO 4729 is definitely a worthy buy for the serious LEGO Harry Potter collector!
