LEGO Freeing Dobby Set

Dobby is one of the most popular characters in the Harry Potter universe. The scene where the House Elf wins his freedom is so iconic it has become a meme that continues to this day. It’s no wonder it has become a LEGO set as well! Let’s see what the LEGO 4736 Freeing Dobby set is all about.

LEGO 4736 Freeing Dobby Set

This tiny and sweet set is charming in its own way. This LEGO Dobby set (and it is all about Dobby) is remarkable in that it does a lot with very little. It’s basically just three minifigures and an archway with a neat playable feature. Not much else there.

Still, that’s exactly what this set means to do. At around 19.1 x 14.1 x 4.6 cm it’s a reasonably sized set, dimension-wise. This set includes a Lucius Malfoy minifigure, a Harry Potter minifigure and, of course, a Dobby minifigure.

It also includes Tom Riddle’s Diary and a plate with a sock print on it.

LEGO 4736 Freeing Dobby Review

This LEGO Dobby set is small but sweet. The main build is an archway, fairly simple and straightforward. This comes with an interesting play feature that pushes the minifigure standing on it forward. This imitates the scene in both book and movie (Chamber of Secrets) where Dobby does the same to Lucius Malfoy, and that’s what intended here.

The arch fits well with the LEGO Hogwarts set, although it doesn’t come with the possibility to do so. The lever that works the play feature is unfortunately bright red and detracts a little from the overall look, which is tan, grey and sandy green. There is also a gold stud for extra detail as well as a broomstick and a spider, which attach to either side of the doorway.

This set is the second one to portray this scene, with the previous one being 4731 Dobby’s Release. That set featured a generic corner of a Hogwarts room, a Lucius Malfoy and a Dobby minifigure, both of which changed in LEGO 4736. In LEGO 4731, Lucius had a yellow face and Dobby’s face had no print on it.

Minifigures

In this version, Lucius has flesh-toned skin, and he has a second face with a Death Eater mask. While this minifigure is relatively common, it’s still useful in play if you want a generic Death Eater, although this version doesn’t come with a hood.

Dobby, on the other hand, is unique to this set. This minifigure has a uniquely moulded head and shorter, unmoving legs. It also has a very nice print of the sack he wears as clothes in his enslaved House Elf status. In this one, his face has print on it, making it a lot nicer than the previous set’s version.

Harry’s minifigure isn’t rare or unique, but still a nice inclusion if this is your only set. He wears his school uniform in this one.

The set also comes with a black book to represent Tom Riddle’s diary (although it has no print or sticker on it saying so) and a plate with a sock printed on it. It’s possible to put the sock in the diary as well, to fully recreate the intended book/movie scene.

Conclusion

There isn’t a lot to say about this set, other than it does quite a bit with very little. The play feature is cool, the pieces are nice and interesting and can be farmed for other projects (or used in other contexts). The minifigures are the major draw, especially the Dobby minifigure, which is unique. Still, a neat addition to the Harry Potter fan!
