LEGO City 2018 Sets First Look
LEGO City is an interesting theme because it’s so open-ended and varied. These sets are where creativity can really shine at its brightest, as you don’t have any stories to hold your playability down. Whether together or apart, there is a lot that can be done with LEGO City sets, so let’s take a glance at what our imaginary town has to offer this year.
There are a couple of polybags to come out this year. These little builds are awesome to bring that extra detail to the city, as well as being a simple way to get minifigures and parts for bigger projects.
LEGO 30356 Hot Dog Stand
This polybag is a personal favourite, as it’s so simple but still quite sweet. It has only 43 pieces, but it builds a cute hot dog stand. It comes with a bun and a hot dog to add, which can be useful in other scenarios. As well as the stand, it also has a trashcan — can’t allow littering! For a polybag, it offers a small but still interesting build that actually has playable value in a LEGO urban environment.
LEGO 30357 Road Worker
This polybag is also quite useful. It comes with 58 pieces and builds a small car with a road worker sign. The minifigure wears a hard hat and carries a light and a walkie-talkie, all interesting pieces seen in any city. It also carries a warning sign with studs to represent the lights.
LEGO 30358 Dragster
This is a LEGO exclusive polybag released in January 2018. This is a very simple build, with 40 pieces. It will be a nice free gift, although it’s nothing particularly interesting.
These larger sets are the “meat” of every LEGO theme. This year brings a lot of mining-related LEGO City sets, as well as some related to the Mountain Police subtheme. November brought some of these already, and we’ve covered others, such as the Dirt Road Pursuit, the Off-Road Chase and the Mountain Fugitives set.
But there’s still more sets coming, so let’s take a look at them.
LEGO 60174 Mountain Police Headquarters
This is a rather large build, with 663 parts, and one of the most interesting of the LEGO City 2018 sets. It includes the headquarters themselves, which are fairly small, as well as several vehicles, minifigures and even a mountain lion! The headquarters are on a mountainside, with a holding cell for your prisoner and a fair amount of detail. It also includes a small cave area underneath (where the mountain lion hides) and a very funny minifigure in a tree disguise.
LEGO 60175 Mountain River Heist
The LEGO Mountain River Heist set comes with a specific amount of play possibilities. It comes with a bank armoured car loaded with gold bars, and an amphibious vehicle with a hook to grapple on the armoured car’s back. This pulls the gold bars out of the armoured car. Joining the heist there is a bandit with a chainsaw, to fell a tree. The tree is on a hinge that falls over to stop the armoured car. There is also a police plane to follow the bandits. This set comes with four minifigures: two bandits, the armoured car driver and the police officer pilot.
LEGO 60176 Wild River Escape
Also part of the Mountain Police subtheme, this simple set has a raft, used by a bandit to escape with stolen goods, and a police boat in hot pursuit. It comes with a police minifigure, a pair of handcuffs, a bandit minifigure, a crate with jewels and a crowbar, and a skunk.
LEGO 60177 Airshow Jet
This set is appropriate for children from 5-12 and only has 82 pieces. It’s a sweet little build in red and blue, with stickers offering decoration to the set, and it comes with a minifigure for the pilot. It’s on the cheaper side and it shows, as it’s a very simple but cute build that is an excellent toy for younger children.
LEGO 60178 Speed Record Car
This speed record car is sponsored by Octan! The fictional gas company produced this awesome jet-powered vehicle, reminiscent of real-life concept cars. The car comes with flames to the jet engine, which enhance the look. This set has 78 pieces and is relatively simple to build, perfect for younger children!
LEGO 60184 Mining Team
This is a very simple, 82 pieces set, but fun for play. It comes with two small vehicles for transporting materials, two terrain formations with interactive features, three minifigures, a safe with a display, and a glow-in-the-dark spider. Plus, mining-themed accessories such as a pickaxe and a shovel, and gold nuggets!
LEGO 60185 Mining Power Splitter
The power splitter has a cool mechanism to drill into the piece of terrain that accompanies this set. While the whole vehicle is quite simple in design, it does its job and looks far more realistic than expected. This set also comes with a minifigure, a gold nugget piece and a glow-in-the-dark spider. This set has 127 pieces.
LEGO 60186 Mining Heavy Driller
This set continues the LEGO City 2018 sets mining theme. It has a heavy driller to excavate the terrain, plus a dump truck to transport the mined material. This set also comes with an analysis table, with a computer, to identify your mined goodies! This set has 294 pieces and comes with three minifigures.
LEGO 60188 Mining Experts Site
This set has 883 pieces, but it does cover a lot of things. It’s one of the biggest and most complex of the LEGO City 2018 sets and comes with a very well-finished rock grinder vehicle, with lots of Technic pieces and functionalities. There are also tracks with mining carts in them, lots of gold nugget pieces, and a glow-in-the-dark spider. Other features include 5 minifigures, a truck, a lot of accessories and a lot of playability. But watch out for the bear!
