LEGO is famous for its vehicles in brick format — and gearheads are sure to love these beautiful, minifigure-sized models of famous racecars! The LEGO Speed Champions 2018 sets continue the tradition with many models of real-world makers, such as Porsche, Ford and, of course, Ferrari!
LEGO Speed Champions is a set from 2015 that focuses on real-world racing cars. These come in LEGO form as realistically as possible — and in minifigure scale. Thus far, there have been 22 sets, bringing cars such as the Ferrari, Audi and many others.
These sets are of particular interest to racing enthusiasts and gearheads everywhere. They come around every March and each year has a thematic colour in its box art, with 2015 being red, 2016 being blue and 2017 being gold.
The LEGO Speed Champions 2018 sets should have a theme colour as well, although from what we know it’s not clear if that will be the case. Note that this affects only the box art and occasionally the pilot’s helmet, not the cars themselves!
This year, we’ve six sets we already know of, with the possibility for more on the way. This year’s theme seems to be dark grey or black, although there seems to be a little variation. Let’s check them out!
75884 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback
The 75884 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback showed the original design for the 1967-1968 era of Mustangs, an improvement over the previous versions. The LEGO version seems inspired in the Shelby model, which was typical of the GT, which I presume was what LEGO went for in this set.
The LEGO version is a bit blockier than the original, but that’s to be expected from a LEGO car — especially in this size, which doesn’t lend itself to a lot of details. The set also includes a pilot in racing gear with a wrench and a speed meter that registers a quarter mile drag in 9 seconds.
This car, in special in colour, could be a callback to Steve McQueen’s 1968 Bullit, which made this Ford Mustang Fastback famous.
This is one of Ford’s rally cars and a move away from the more tradition LEGO Speed Champions track cars. And it’s a good one: this isn’t your traditional Ford Fiesta, for sure. This car seems inspired by the 2016 RS WRC and comes in blue and white. This car sports the Ecoboost engine (as announced by a sticker), inaugurated in this series of cars in the real world between 2011-2016 (and ongoing to date).
The LEGO 75885 set comes with extra caps and a driver in a white helmet.
The LEGO Speed Champions 2018 run brings us another Ferrari, this time the 488 GT3. This set comes with the second LEGO female driver in the Speed Champions theme. The main car is, of course, the typical Ferrari red, bringing the 488 GT3 model as inaugurated in the 2016 Australian GT Championship.
This is one of two Ferrari-themed sets in this year’s LEGO Speed Champions sets. There’s another set coming that we’ll discuss soon.
Built in 2014, the Porsche 919 Hybrid is the German auto company’s entry for the FIA World Endurance Championship, following the Porsche RS Spyder (also featured in a Speed Champions set). This car is in the LMP1-H category in the real world, and very faithfully recreated in LEGO form.
Beyond the Porsche, this set has a minifigure driver with a laptop, stoplights, extra caps and a laptop. This isn’t the only Porsche to make it this year, either!
This set comes with two different Porsches, the classic 911 Turbo 3.0 and the 911 RSR. Both cars follow their real-world counterparts quite well, full of details and, as with other sets, with a very nice cockpit for your minifigures. And while the cars alone could be a good thing by themselves, the set also comes with three minifigures, pit wall with race position counter, a lap counter and checkered flag items for your LEGO races!
This is the second Ferrari entry in LEGO Speed Champions 2018 sets, and the most complex and biggest set announced thus far. The LEGO 75889 set brings three Ferrari cars, seven minifigures and a racing track, as well as a workshop.
The workshop doubles as a Ferrari museum. The cars themselves represent different epochs of the Ferrari automotive company. They are the Ferrari 250 GTO, Ferrari 488 GTE and the historic Ferrari 312 T4, each with their own driver minifigure.
Beyond that, it includes a race marshal, a mechanic and two visitors. The 312 T4 comes with an extra, interchangeable wing, and the racetrack repurposes rollercoaster pieces. The Ferrari-lover among us will certainly enjoy this set and all it has to offer.
So that’s it for now! These are some of the new LEGO Speed Champions 2018 sets, which hit the stores this March. If you want to know more or keep up to date with new sets (if there are any), stay tuned to this post as we’ll update it as we learn more!
